Hello Foodie Friends, September is a special time for food enthusiasts, nutrition advocates, and nature lovers alike. It marks the celebration of National Mushroom Month, a 30-day period dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the incredible world of fungi. While mushrooms might appear small and unassuming, their impact on our culinary, medicinal, and ecological landscapes is nothing short of remarkable.

Mushrooms have long held a cherished place in cuisines around the world. Their rich, earthy flavors and unique textures make them a favorite ingredient for chefs and home cooks alike.

The mushroom kingdom boasts an impressive array of species, each with its distinct taste and texture. From the delicate enoki mushrooms to the hearty portobello, there’s a mushroom to suit every palate. This diversity allows for endless culinary creativity, from mushroom risottos and stews to umami-rich mushroom burgers.

Mushrooms unique umami flavor can add depth and complexity to any dish.  Mushrooms are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. They can be eaten raw, cooked, dried, pickled or fermented. They can be used as a meat substitute, a flavor enhancer, a sauce base or a snack. They can be added to soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, stir-fries, casseroles and more. There are thousands of mushroom varieties to choose from, each with its own unique taste, texture and appearance.

Mushrooms are also good for the planet. They can help reduce food waste by growing on organic materials that would otherwise be discarded. Mushrooms are nature’s recyclers. They play a vital role in breaking down organic matter, such as fallen leaves and dead trees, into nutrient-rich soil. This decomposition process is essential for nutrient cycling in ecosystems.

As more people embrace plant-based diets, mushrooms have become a star ingredient for their ability to mimic the taste and texture of meat. Mushroom-based dishes like portobello burgers and oyster mushroom scallops offer satisfying alternatives for vegetarians and vegans.

Before I share with you some delicious mushroom recipes, here are a few tips for cooking mushrooms:

  • Clean mushrooms gently. Mushrooms are like sponges, so they absorb water easily. To clean them, simply wipe them with a damp cloth or brush them with a soft brush. Don’t soak them in water, as this will make them mushy.
  • Slice mushrooms thinly. This will help them to cook evenly and quickly.
  • Cook mushrooms over medium-high heat. This will help to prevent them from releasing too much water.
  • Season mushrooms with salt and pepper. Mushrooms have a relatively mild flavor, so they benefit from a little seasoning.

There are many ways to celebrate National Mushroom Month, one of those is cook a mushroom dish. There are endless recipes for mushroom dishes, from simple to complex. Try something new or revisit an old favorite. Here are some of the most popular mushroom recipes:

Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms

Ingredients:

12-16 large white or cremini mushrooms (cleaned and stems removed)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2-3 cloves garlic (minced)

2-3 tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped)

2-3 tablespoons olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Cooking spray or extra olive oil for greasing

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Mushrooms: Gently wipe the mushrooms clean with a damp paper towel to remove any dirt or debris. Carefully twist off or cut out the stems from each mushroom, creating a hollow space for the stuffing. Set the mushroom caps aside.

Prepare the Filling: Finely chop the mushroom stems, as they will be used in the filling. In a skillet, heat 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped mushroom stems. Sauté them for about 5 minutes until they become tender, and any released liquid evaporates. Remove from heat.

Make the Stuffing Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the sautéed mushroom stems and garlic with the breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix everything well until the mixture is evenly combined. If the mixture seems dry, you can add a bit more olive oil.

Stuff the Mushrooms: Using a small spoon or your hands, stuff each mushroom cap with a generous amount of the breadcrumb mixture, pressing it down gently to make sure it adheres to the mushroom. Place the stuffed mushrooms on a baking sheet or a baking dish greased with cooking spray or olive oil.

Bake: Put the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until the mushrooms are tender and the stuffing is golden brown on top. Once done, remove the stuffed mushrooms from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve them warm as an appetizer or snack. You can garnish them with additional chopped parsley for extra freshness.

Enjoy your homemade stuffed mushrooms! They make an excellent appetizer for gatherings or a tasty treat for any mushroom lover.

Mushroom Soup

Ingredients:

1 pound (450g) fresh mushrooms (white or cremini), cleaned and sliced

1 medium onion, chopped.

2 cloves garlic, minced.

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

4 cups (1 liter) chicken or vegetable broth

1 cup (240ml) heavy cream

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

Sauté the Mushrooms: In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until they become translucent. Add the minced garlic and sliced mushrooms. Cook for another 5-7 minutes, or until the mushrooms have released their moisture and become tender. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Make the Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to combine. Cook for about 2-3 minutes to remove the raw taste of the flour. This will help thicken the soup.

Add the Broth: Gradually pour in the chicken or vegetable broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the soup to thicken.

Blend the Soup: Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until it reaches your desired level of smoothness. If you don’t have an immersion blender, carefully transfer the soup in batches to a regular blender and blend until smooth. Be cautious when blending hot liquids; leave a vent for steam to escape to avoid splattering.

Add the Cream: Return the blended soup to the pot if necessary. Stir in the heavy cream and warm the soup over low heat. Do not let it boil after adding the cream to prevent curdling. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Ladle the creamy mushroom soup into bowls. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!

This homemade mushroom soup is perfect for a cozy meal, especially on a chilly day. You can pair it with a slice of crusty bread or a salad for a complete and satisfying meal.

Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients:

8 oz (about 2 cups) fresh mushrooms (white or cremini), finely chopped
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons butter or olive oil (for a vegan option)
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups vegetable broth
1/2 cup heavy cream or a dairy-free alternative (such as coconut cream or almond milk)
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (or fresh thyme leaves)
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

Sauté the Mushrooms: In a skillet, melt the butter (or heat the olive oil) over medium-high heat. Add the finely chopped mushrooms and onions. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the mushrooms have released their moisture and become tender.

Add Garlic and Flour: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant. Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to combine. Cook for 2-3 minutes to remove the raw taste of the flour.

Deglaze with Broth: Gradually pour in the vegetable broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Add Cream and Seasoning: Lower the heat and add the heavy cream (or dairy-free alternative) and dried thyme to the gravy. Stir well to combine. Let the gravy simmer for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Adjust Consistency: If the gravy is too thick, you can add more vegetable broth to reach your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, continue simmering until it thickens a bit more. Once your mushroom gravy reaches the desired consistency and is heated through, remove it from the heat. If desired, garnish with fresh parsley.

Your homemade mushroom gravy is ready to be served. Pour it over mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or your favorite meat substitute. Enjoy!

Hello Foodie Friends, every year on September 7th, beer enthusiasts from around the world raise their glasses in celebration of National Beer Lover’s Day. This delightful holiday pays homage to one of the oldest and most beloved beverages known to humanity – beer. From the ancient Egyptians to the craft beer aficionados of today, beer has consistently held a special place in our hearts and culture. So, grab your favorite brew, settle in, and let’s explore the rich history and enduring appeal of beer on this special day.

National Beer Lovers Day is observed every year on September 7th in the United States. The origin of this holiday is unclear, but some sources suggest that it was created by a group of beer enthusiasts in 2008 as a way to promote and appreciate the craft beer industry.

The history of beer stretches back thousands of years. It’s believed that beer was first brewed over 5,000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq and Iran). Back then, beer was often considered a staple of daily life, consumed as a source of nutrition and hydration. It was even used as currency in some ancient societies.

The brewing process evolved over time, and beer spread throughout the world, taking on unique regional characteristics. As exploration and trade expanded, beer found its way to new corners of the globe, leading to the diverse beer culture we know today.

Today, the world of beer is more diverse than ever before. Craft breweries have exploded in popularity, offering an incredible array of beer styles and flavors. From hoppy IPAs to rich stouts and sour ales, there’s a beer to suit every palate.

National Beer Lover’s Day is the perfect occasion to explore new brews and revisit old favorites. Whether you’re a seasoned beer connoisseur or just dipping your toes into the world of beer, there’s always something new and exciting to discover.

Beer has a remarkable ability to bring people together. It’s not just about the liquid in the glass; it’s about the experiences and connections that happen over a pint. Whether it’s sharing stories with friends at a local pub, attending beer festivals, or enjoying a cold one at a backyard barbecue, beer often serves as a catalyst for social interaction and bonding.

Another exciting aspect of beer culture is the art of food pairing. Just as wine enthusiasts carefully select wines to complement their meals, beer lovers have embraced the idea of pairing different beer styles with various dishes. The range of flavors in beer, from citrusy and crisp to dark and roasty, makes it an excellent companion for everything from spicy tacos to decadent chocolate desserts.

To celebrate this special date, I share with you some perfect pairing for different beer styles and flavors:

India Pale Ale (IPA)

IPAs have been a dominant force in the American beer scene. Here are some perfect food pairings for IPAs: Spicy Foods: IPAs’ hoppy bitterness and citrus notes can help cut through the heat of spicy dishes. Try pairing them with spicy Indian, Thai, or Mexican cuisine. Think chicken tikka masala, spicy tacos, or a plate of buffalo wings. Burgers: IPAs are fantastic with burgers, especially those with strong flavors like blue cheese, bacon, or spicy sauces. The hoppy bitterness contrasts with the richness of the meat and cheese. Barbecue: The smoky, savory flavors of barbecue dishes, such as smoked ribs, pulled pork, or grilled sausages, pair well with the hoppy and slightly bitter profile of an IPA. Fish and Seafood: IPAs complement grilled or fried fish, as well as seafood dishes like shrimp scampi or fish tacos. The citrusy notes in the beer can enhance the flavors of the seafood. Pizza: IPAs and pizza are a classic pairing. The hoppy bitterness contrasts with the cheese and complements a variety of pizza toppings, from pepperoni to vegetarian options.

American Pale Ale (APA)

APAs are known for their balanced flavors, moderate hop bitterness, and often feature a blend of citrus and floral hop aromas. Here are some perfect food pairings for APAs: Grilled Chicken: The light hop bitterness and malt sweetness of APAs complement grilled chicken’s smoky and savory flavors. Marinate the chicken with herbs or citrus for added depth. Salmon: APAs work well with the mild and slightly sweet flavor of salmon, whether grilled, baked, or pan-seared. A citrusy APA can enhance the fish’s natural taste. Grilled Shrimp: The slightly bitter and citrusy notes of an APA can pair nicely with grilled shrimp, especially when served with a light garlic or herb butter sauce. Grilled Vegetables: For a vegetarian option, try pairing APAs with a platter of grilled vegetables, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with herbs and Parmesan cheese. Pasta Dishes: APAs can go well with pasta dishes that feature cream sauces, seafood, or pesto. The beer’s balanced profile works with a variety of pasta ingredients.

Stout

Stout varieties like American Stout, Imperial Stout, and Coffee Stout have gained popularity for their rich, dark, and roasty flavors. Some, like the dessert-inspired milk stouts, offer sweet and creamy notes. Here are some perfect food pairings for Stouts: Chocolate Desserts: Stout’s roasted malt flavors pair wonderfully with chocolate. Try it with chocolate cake, brownies, or chocolate truffles for a delightful dessert pairing. Steak: The robust flavors of a stout can stand up to the richness of a well-marbled steak, making it an ideal pairing for a hearty meal. Cheese: Stout goes beautifully with a variety of cheeses, especially those with bold flavors like blue cheese, cheddar, and gouda. Mushroom Dishes: Stout’s earthy and roasted flavors work well with dishes featuring mushrooms, such as mushroom risotto or a savory mushroom pie. Chili: Stout can be a great companion to a bowl of spicy chili. Its roasted malt flavors can help cool the heat while enhancing the overall experience.

Sour Ales

Sour beers, including Berliner Weisse, Gose, and American Wild Ales, have seen a surge in popularity. They are known for their tart and sometimes fruity or funky flavors. Here are some perfect food pairings for Sour Ales: Cheese and Charcuterie: Sour ales go wonderfully with a cheese and charcuterie board. Try pairing them with cheeses like goat cheese, brie, Camembert, or blue cheese. The acidity of the beer complements the creamy and savory flavors of the cheeses, while the tartness can cut through the richness of the meats. Salads: A crisp sour ale can be a refreshing accompaniment to salads, especially those with vinaigrette dressings. The tartness can balance the acidity in the dressing and add complexity to the greens. Fruit-Based Dishes: Sour ales often have fruity notes, making them a great match for dishes featuring fruit, such as a strawberry and spinach salad or a peach-glazed pork dish. Pickled Vegetables: The tartness of sour ales complements the acidity of pickled vegetables like pickles, sauerkraut, or kimchi. The pairing can create a harmonious balance of flavors. Duck: The complex flavors of duck can be enhanced by the tartness of a sour ale. Try it with duck confit, duck breast with fruit glaze, or a duck salad.

Pilsner

Pilsners, both American and Czech-style, offer a clean and crisp lager experience, appealing to those who prefer a lighter, more straightforward beer. Here are some perfect food pairings for Pilsners: Sushi and Sashimi: Pilsner’s clean and refreshing taste complements the delicate flavors of raw fish and the umami-rich soy sauce and wasabi often served with sushi and sashimi. Chicken and Poultry: Pilsner complements chicken dishes, whether they’re grilled, roasted, or fried. It can cut through the richness of fried chicken and enhance the flavors of grilled chicken. Mexican Cuisine: Pilsner is a classic choice for pairing with Mexican dishes like tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. Its crispness complements the flavors of the cuisine. Shellfish: Pilsner’s crispness can enhance the flavors of shellfish like clams, mussels, and oysters. Enjoy it with a platter of freshly shucked oysters on the half shell. Light Appetizers: Serve Pilsner with light appetizers such as bruschetta, caprese skewers, or cucumber sandwiches. Its clean taste won’t overwhelm delicate flavors.

National Beer Lover’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a beverage that transcends time, culture, and geography. Hello Foodie Friends,

Did you know that July 17th is National Piña Colada Day?!? Well if you didn’t, now you do!!! It is a day dedicated to honoring the tropical flavors and refreshing goodness of the Piña Colada cocktail.

The Piña Colada is a delicious blend of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. The year is 1954. Ramón “Monchito” Marrero is a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is a talented mixologist with a passion for creating new and innovative drinks. One day, he is experimenting with different ingredients when he comes up with a delicious blend of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and white rum. He calls the drink the Piña Colada, which means “strained pineapple” in Spanish.

The Piña Colada is an instant hit with guests at the Caribe Hilton. It is the perfect drink for the tropical climate, and it is a delicious combination of sweet, tart, and creamy flavors. Soon, the Piña Colada is being served in bars and restaurants all over Puerto Rico.

Today, the Piña Colada is a delicious and refreshing drink that perfectly captures the spirit of the Caribbean. It became a beloved drink all over the world,

This celebration offers the perfect excuse to gather with friends or family and enjoy this delicious cocktail, that is why I share with you a Piña Colada home recipe and a perfect pairing for each meal to enjoy with a Piña Colada.

Here is a home recipe for piña colada:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/4 cup coconut cream
  • 2 ounces white rum
  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

In a blender, combine the frozen pineapple chunks, pineapple juice, coconut cream, rum, and ice cubes. Blend until smooth and creamy. Pour into glasses and garnish with fresh pineapple, maraschino cherries, and paper umbrellas (optional).

Tips: For a richer flavor, use full-fat coconut cream. If you don’t have frozen pineapple, you can use fresh pineapple, but you will need to add more ice cubes to the blender. You can adjust the sweetness of the piña colada by adding more or less coconut cream. To make a virgin piña colada, simply omit the rum.  Enjoy!

For breakfast:

Waffles with fruit: Waffles are a classic breakfast food that can be topped with fresh fruit, such as pineapple, strawberries, mango, or banana. The sweetness of the fruit complements the sweetness of the piña colada. Pairing it with a piña colada is a great way to start your day. The tropical flavors of the cocktail will transport you to a beachside paradise, even if you’re stuck at home.

For lunch:

Grilled fish tacos: The sweetness of the piña colada pairs well with the savory flavor of the fish. The grilled fish also adds a touch of smoke to the dish, which helps to balance out the sweetness of the cocktail. Pairing it with a piña colada is a great way to enjoy a tropical treat in the middle of the day.

For dinner:

Grilled chicken or tofu: The grilled chicken or tofu provides a nice contrast to the sweetness of the piña colada. The grilled flavor also adds a touch of smoke to the dish, which helps to balance out the sweetness of the cocktail.  Pairing it with a piña colada is a great way to enjoy a tropical treat at the end of the day.

So, on National Piña Colada Day, raise your glass and toast to the refreshing and tropical flavors of this beloved cocktail. Let the Piña Colada transport you to a state of blissful relaxation and remind you of the joys of summer. Cheers to National Piña Colada Day!

Until we eat (and drink) again…

Hello Foodie Friends,

This blog is from our guest contributor Yvette Vysosias from Bounce.

If you are in the area of Penn Station, you need to make sure that you have somewhere tasty in mind to eat. You will find that these food spots are ideal for you to get a snack or a full meal so that you can eat on the go or just grab something quick. This is a really great place to visit if you are in New York City, and you will probably be in this part of the city long enough to get a meal.

No matter where you are planning to get a bite near Penn Station, you will want to be sure that you get your bags into secure storage first off. You will have a much better time if you do not have to deal with your bags while you are trying to eat. Having your hands free is essential when you are traveling and want to have peace of mind.

Tasty Street Food Near Penn Station

1.       Salt & Pepper

This is a really great food spot to drop in at if you are not quite sure what you want to eat. There are simple offerings of American, Spanish, Indian, and Pakistani dishes on offer here, and you can grab and go with ease at this location. The prices are a little high, but you will get a lot of food for your money with each order. The staff are really friendly as well and can help you to pick the right food for your meal.

The Pakistani dishes are particularly good, and you should consider these options a must-try, especially if you have never had this cuisine before.

2.       Delimanjoo

This location offers you bite-sized cakes that are truly delicious to eat. There are gluten-free options on the menu here as well, and you get a lot of food for your money when you order from this little cart. This cart is often located at Broadway and 5th Ave, and they are a local favorite.

There are other menu offerings to try as well, like custard creams and croissant fish if you want something that is not a cake. The service is friendly, and you will be able to grab your sweets and head out to have more fun.

3.       Snackbox

This hot dog stand also offers lobster rolls and some other snacks and treats, and they have their signature pineapple relish every day as well. You can find them on the Avenue of the Americas and 5th Ave in the Theater District most days. If you love a really good street vendor dog, there is no better place in the city to stop for a snack.

Many people recommend the spicy Coney Island meat sauce, and they have all the usual toppings, which is great if you love to have a dog with all the trimmings on it.

4.       Hong Kong Street Cart

This cart is usually in Madison Square Park, and you can get all kinds of delicious full plates and snacks here. Their pork buns are a huge and well-known hit in the area, and the honey lemonade is to die for. Make sure that you consider trying their 2-for-1 beer specials as well. This is an authentic street food cart, and the prices are great here. Many people walk multiple blocks to be able to eat here, and you will love that they keep longer hours than some other carts in the area.

The pork buns sell out fast each day, so you might have to miss out on them if you show up too late in the day. Consider making this your lunchtime stop to increase your odds of getting one of the sought-after and famous pork buns.

5.       Halal Cart

This cart hangs out at 34th st and Fashion Ave, and you will be able to get delicious chicken over rice here as well as some other lovely sides like fresh veggies, black beans, and other toppings. This cart is definitely affordable, and you get a really large portion when you choose to eat here as well. The white sauce is excellent, and you will want to make sure that you try all the various toppings as well.

The menu here is limited, so if you are not interested in chicken and rice-based food, then this might not be the cart for you. Halal carts are a classic food cart choice in New York, however, and many people cite this spot as the place to go for a delightfully simple and tasty meal.

6.       Wafels & Dinges

Do you love waffles? If you do, then this is the right cart for you! You can get all kinds of specialty waffles with yummy toppings and great coffee to go along with them. They also offer hot chocolate, and they make all of their food to order when you walk up, which is great. The portions are large, the prices are great, and they have five carts spread out all over the city. The carts in either Times Square or Bryant Park will be your best options from Penn Station.

Hello Foodie Friends,

I know it’s been a while since my last blog post and I do apologize for that but we have been super busy the last few months with several group bookings in both South and Central FL. It appears that many companies that had to postpone their travel plans have now been given the green light to take their teams out and for many of them who have been working remotely for the past two years, this is their first opportunity to bring their remote staff together for some team bonding/building activities which they are booking like crazy right now. The size of the groups that are being booked now, as compared to prior to the breakout in 2020 has increased quite considerably. Up until 2020, the average size group was around 20 people. Now the average is 40+.

At any rate, I happened to see a post on my Instagram feed highlighting this place called Cerveceria La Tropical nestled in an Oasis nestled in Wynwood and it definitely caught my eye. So much so, that I reached out to them and scheduled a visit to check them out. Not only so that I can share my find with you, but so I could hopefully plan some fun events there for my groups. Gloria, the Event Manager was off on this particular Sunday when I arrived, so she arranged for me to meet with Mike, one of the restaurant managers on duty on this day. I drove down from Boca and soon after I arrived, I met Mike who was expecting me. We bumped into Gloria of all people, who came on her day off with her family, to celebrate her birthday (now that sure is a testimonial to how much she loves this place!)

Cerveceria La Tropical is a “Tank to Glass” concept where they pour their brewed-in-house beers right from the tanks in the main dining room that also happens to have a great back story.  On July 21, 1888 The Blanco-Herrera family establishes Cervecería La Tropical on (Cuban) lands once owned by Federico Kohly. Cuba’s Oldest Brewery grows and grows, and by 1958 La Tropical accounts for over 60% of all beer production in Cuba, making the brand world-renowned. La Tropical stands alongside cigars, rum and music as the pride of Cuba.

“La Tropical founded the Cuban beer industry. La Tropical comprised acre upon acre of a brewery, tropical gardens and a baseball stadium, whose in-field sand was made of crushed La Tropical bottles. There were many owners, but my family held majority ownership. As a kid, I loved going to the brewery with my father. I can still smell the sweet and thick malty scent coming from the brewery.” RAMON BLANCO-HERRERA 4th Generation La Tropical Family Member

In 1896 Florida’s First Brewery is founded in Ybor City/Tampa, Florida, by Cuban cigar industrialist family: Martinez-Ybor. In 1897 La Tropical beer is produced and distributed in Florida. The Florida La Tropical brand has an affiliation with the La Tropical brand from Cuba. In the early 1900’s La Tropical in Ybor City produced 80,000 barrels of beer at its’ peak. The Cuban embargo and new Florida competition from Anheuser Busch and Schlitz forced the shutdown of the brewery in 1961. Dale Swope, a Tampa attorney, acquires the old La Tropical brewery in Ybor City in 1999 and embarks on a historical preservation project to save the building after years of neglect.

in 1904 The La Tropical beer gardens are opened, near the banks of the Almendares River, and quickly become a must-go destination for cold cerveza, fun, music and dance. Designed by Cuban architect Ramón Magriñá, the gardens were inspired by the Spanish gardens of Gaudí. Los Jardines de La Tropical included a botanical Tropical garden with a multitude of concrete structures designed in a modernist and organic style, as well as a replica castle of the Alhambra de Granada in Spain.

SYLVIA MUÑIZ DE MURAI

Daughter Of La Tropical General Manager In Cuba (1922-2016)

“My father was the General Manager of the brewery and we lived in an exquisite castle within Los Jardines de La Tropical. They were the happiest days of my childhood.”

1960 marks the arrival of the revolution in Cuba begins and La Tropical’s assets are seized. The Cuban exodus begins and over one million Cubans flee the island, including the now impoverished Blanco-Herrera and Kohly families. Miami welcomes them with open arms.

“It was Christmas Eve, December 24, 1960, when our world changed forever and our family was forced to flee our Cuban homeland. The Castro government stole our home and investment properties. My mother was widowed, with three young children, and landed in Miami with only $5 in her pocket. It was very tough at first. Sixty years later, Miami became our new home and where my children were born and raised.” GRAZIELLA RODRIGUEZ-KOHLY 4th Generation Kohly And Mother Of Manny Portuondo

1960 – 2020

The Disappearance

Inside Cuba, La Tropical is now run by the revolution. La Tropical is eventually lost, but never forgotten.

“They came at gunpoint to take the brewery. I was one of the last senior managers at the brewery that day and was forced to hand over the keys. They knew about managing a brewery, what I knew about going to the moon.”

JULIO FERNANDEZ-SELLES Last Master Brewer Of Cervecería La Tropical (Pre-Revolution) 1917-2002

In 1998, The Comeback Begins…

Manny Portuondo, great-great grandson of Federico Kohly makes it his passion project in life to bring La Tropical back. At the age of 32, after a successful career with Anheuser-Busch and the Brahma Brewery of Brazil, he mortgages his home and raises capital from the prominent Cuban American community in Miami, including Ramon Blanco-Herrera.Three Palms Holdings is formed and for two decades Manny Portuondo fights to secure control of the La Tropical brand in key markets throughout the world.

“In my early 30s, I entered a phase where I longed to learn more about where I came from and how my family got to the United States of America. I became fascinated with my family’s past and the La Tropical story in particular. Not long after, I decided to do something about it and fight back.” MANNY PORTUONDO 5th Generation Kohly, Founder Of Three Palms Holdings & CEO Of Cervecería La Tropical

In 2016 La Tropical hosts a teaser beer launch in the heart of Miami under license with the Boston Beer Company. The launch is a great success with customers lining up for hours to taste the original recipe of La Tropical’s award-winning La Original Ambar Lager at a local Wynwood brewery. Very quickly, La Tropical becomes a best seller. La Tropical generates local and international attention that leads to interest from many of the world’s largest brewers.

After two decades of fighting to save La Tropical, Three Palms Holdings completes the majority sale of La Tropical brand to Heineken NV. With no physical brewery, Heineken makes a significant investment to build a Miami home for Cervecería La Tropical. Scouting begins for the perfect site. A ¾ acre site in the Wynwood Arts District is acquired and construction begins in 2019 to include a 32 thousand hectoliter per year brewery, tap room, restaurant and beer garden. A true destination brewery for beverage consumers everywhere.

Cervecería La Tropical has a new Miami home, a testament to perseverance, passion, hard work and the belief that all is possible if you dare to make your dreams come true. Over a century in the making, and inspired by the tropics, Cuba’s Oldest Brewery is now one of Miami’s Youngest.

Manager Mike was happy to give me a tour of the place which included the brewery and the tropical garden (which is an extension of the Fairchild Tropical Gardens I learned). Tropical trees such as guava and herbs can be found in the gardens and are labeled with each tree or bush’s description and a QR Code to hover over to learn even more. He informed me that Chef Cindy Hutson was expecting me and was preparing to have a number of their popular dishes brought out for me to try. Funny thing is I have been following Chef Cindy for years. I first heard about her work at Orantanique on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables (which sadly closed this location after 21 years in business.) I was super excited to finally meet this chef who I have the utmost respect and admiration for. First up on the tasting menu was my choice of beer. Whenever I see a “Sour” on the menu, this is my go-to. I ordered the Dulce Sour and got to choose a flavor to infuse it with; I went with my server Brittany’s suggestion, guava, and man o man, was this beer ever so refreshing, it really hit the spot. So much so, that even though I had only intended to consume one, I just had to have another.

Cervecercia just began offering brunch on Sat, Oct 1st and this was only their second day when I came that Sunday. They had a live band that was setting up to go on at 1pm. They have a weekly live music line up which can be viewed on their website. Live bands throughout the week nights and during Sunday Brunch from 1 -4pm.

First dish brought out for me to try was a sample size portion of their popular guava and cream cheese French Toast with vanilla bean cream cheese drizzle and blood orange maple syrup and guava compound butter. Went terrific with my guava sour beer! (If you like guava like I do, you will love this place as guava makes its appearance throughout the menu.) I think this might have been my favorite dish of the afternoon.

Next, came the Caribbean Avocado Toast. This was a very unique version of an avocado toast. It came with toasted pepita seeds, charred shishito peppers, tomato marmalade, cojita cheese and topped with a soft cooked egg. I really enjoyed the flavor profiles and they combined perfectly to create a balanced bite. It was a little top heavy for the bread though, so it became a little soggy and a little messy as a result.

Next came the Harnish de Maiz con Queso – Cheesy Grits…(again, the pic below is a smaller portion than what is typically served). This one pot wonder consisted of chorizo sausage, onions, peppers, and served with a side of Cuban toast for mopping up all the deliciousness.

Something on the menu caught my eye. It was “woo aioli”. I asked Brittany what was this and she brought me out some plantain chips with a side of this secret sauce. It way yummy. I could have ingested a whole container of this stuff . LOL

My final two tastings were the Ham Croqueta and the Cuban Sandwich Empanada. Both were very tasty and I can see why they are crowd pleasers.

Manager Michael Moss was most accommodating. He is pretty new to the Cerveceria La Tropical team but not new at all to the restaurant business. He had recently joined the team having been with a large restaurant group for many years prior.

Brittany, my server was so cute and super helpful.

It was so great to finally meet Chef Cindy in person. She is so creative. Super talented chef!!!

There is a $10 cover to enter on the weeknights there is a live band performing, but that fee also includes one complimentary cocktail that will be served inside the “Birdcage” as guests enter on the right.

Cerveceria La Tropical is an ideal spot for casual dining for brunch, lunch and dinner and is a perfect venue for group events too!

They are closed on Mondays and are open Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 4PM-11PM, (Kitchen until 10PM)

Friday: 12PM-1AM, Kitchen until midnight (limited menu past 10PM)

Saturday: 11:30AM-1AM, Kitchen until midnight (limited menu past 10PM)

Sunday: 11:30AM-10PM, Kitchen until 9PM

Until we eat (and drink) again…

I send you delicious wishes, xo

Hello Foodie Friends,

Today’s blog post is courtesy of guest contributor, Joyce Wilson.

If you’re planning a move to Boca Raton, Florida, you’ve made a fantastic choice. Warm weather, friendly people, and a thriving cultural scene make this coastal city very livable. You’ll also find a wide array of fantastic bars and restaurants in the area. Savor Our City is dedicated to providing the inside track on Boca Raton dining. Read on for the highlights.

Your Boca Raton moving quick guide

Before you can jump into the Boca Raton dining scene, you’ll have to take care of a few administrative aspects. First off? Finding a place to live. Check out Boca Raton areas on RedFin to get an idea of what to expect from different neighborhoods. You can search according to details like size, price range, and amenities.

Once you have your new home, there are still a few other admin items to check off your to-do list. For example, you might want to look up your nearest DMV via DMV Near Me to update your license and registration, and research healthcare providers in the area so you know who to call in an emergency. If you have kids, you also have to think about enrolling them in school.

 Favorite Boca Raton eateries

Once you’ve got the annoying logistical points of your to-do list checked off, it’s time for the fun part—exploring Boca Raton’s many famous eateries. Seafood is an obvious go-to if you’re dining in this coastal town. Local favorites include Ke’e Grill, Luff’s Fish House, Seagrille, and City Fish Market.

If seafood isn’t your thing and you’d prefer a hearty steak, Boca Raton doesn’t disappoint. Head to Ruth’s Chris SteakHouse for a traditional cut of red meat, get a taste of the Big Apple with a visit to New York Prime Steakhouse, or head to The Capital Grille for a decadent steak dinner.

Looking for something more exotic than surf and turf? Boca Raton has you covered. Try Asian cuisine at Lemongrass Asian Bistro or Bento Boca Raton. If sushi is your favorite, consider Yakitori Sake House or Sushi Rock Boca Raton. Interested in Mexican? Senor Burrito, Baja Cantina, and Ahtziri Mexican Restaurant are all options.

Of course, after a hearty meal, you’ll want to finish up with a sweet treat. If you’re with the family, try 16 Handles for ice cream. Want something more exotic? Try Sugar Milk Boba and Dessert Bar. There are loads of other ice cream spots too, from Belove Creamery to Proper Ice Cream. Take your time and sample them all to pick your favorite.

 Other hotspots worth mentioning

Sometimes it’s less about the food and more about the atmosphere. Rest assured, Boca Raton offers loads of fun bars and lounges where you can relax with friends, entertain business clients, or kick off a romantic date. From waterfront bistros to speakeasy-style lounges, there’s something to suit every taste.

Restaurant Guru offers a comprehensive roundup of some of the best cocktail bars in the city. Mizner’s Monkey Bar, Roadhouse, and Bazille are a few names on the list you’ll want to check out. If you want to keep it simple, try The Black Rose Irish Pub. You can expect a friendly atmosphere and hearty brews.

If you want to take your dining and drinks to the next level, consider a waterfront location. There’s nothing more soothing than sipping a tasty drink while hearing the sound of the nearby water.

Boca Raton isn’t just for soaking up the sun, surf, and sand. This coastal Florida city offers a lot of great dining options. You’ll have plenty to explore once you arrive.

Dear Foodie Friends,

Today’s post is from our guest contributor Leslie Campos, with wellparents.com

You’re planning a trip down to South Florida because you’ve heard of the incredible food scene. It’s true — few places in the United States can match Miami and surrounding areas with a diverse selection of world-class cuisine. Whether you’re looking for Cuban, Peruvian, Greek, Asian, Indian, American, or any other cuisine, South Florida is the place to be.

Planning your foodie trip is simple enough when you use curation services like Savor Our City. but if you’ve decided to bring your dog along, you’ll need to make some special considerations and preparations. Check out these practical tips for taking a food adventure in South Florida with your furry companion!

Get a Sitter if All Else Fails

Your dog is your constant companion and true friend, but they cannot go to every place you go. Don’t let that deter you from taking them on trips with you.

Give yourself and your pet the opportunity to create traveling memories when you can, and for the things they cannot do, hire a pet sitter to care for them while you’re away. Search online for a reputable, highly rated pet sitter in your destination spot and enjoy all the things your trip has to offer.

Look into Pet Insurance

Traveling with your pet is full of wondrous adventures, but with new experiences also come risks and uncertainties. You may not always be able to foresee the dangers your trip can pose to your canine.

To avoid high emergency vet bills and ensure you’re keeping your pet healthy, get pet insurance for your dog before leaving on your trip. Be sure to compare coverage, premiums, age limits, deductibles, reviews, and quotes to select the best plan.

Research Dog-Friendly Restaurants

While your dog may not be able to go with you everywhere and take in all the sights and activities, one thing they can do is dine out. Miami and South Beach are known for their love of pets and welcoming them along with their owners. Here are some places to check out if you’re in the mood to grab a bite with your dog:

  • Casa Sensei offers pan-Asian Latin fusion cuisine with waterfront views.
  • Big City Tavern is perfect for lunch and the tavern foods we all love, with comfortable outdoor seating available.
  • Tiki Tiki serves up amazing surf and turf in a relaxed atmosphere, right on Hollywood Beach.
  • My Big Fat Greek Restaurant offers up quality Greek food on a canal.
  • Yolo offers contemporary American food, a lovely outdoor patio, and an enjoyable fire pit.

Book Comfortable Accommodations

The options are limitless for places available to you and your pet to stay. Whether you choose a short-term rental or a dog-friendly hotel, you won’t have to skimp on quality and comfort just because your dog is with you.

Many short-term rentals allow pets and only ask for a small pet fee in addition to the daily rental rate to go towards cleaning and potential damages. Miami not only has dog beaches, parks, and pet-friendly restaurants but is also the home to many pet-friendly hotels (some that require a pet fee and some that don’t).

Conclusion

South Florida has amazing food, beaches, shopping, entertainment, and culture. To top it off, they will welcome you and your pet with open arms.

If you want to go on a foodie journey, rest assured you can bring your dog with you to many places, and for those places where your beloved pet can’t go, you’ll be able to find a qualified pet sitter nearby. Remember to research your pet insurance options and start planning your next adventure today!
